Breaking the Kata (Broken Mermaid)

Ena Dahl and Roxu

Part of Rebound Week! This session is making a special return until September 28.

Deconstructing and reconstructing the Mermaid Tie

Class type: Demonstration and tie along
Duration: 60 minutes
Props: At least 6 x 7-8m ropes, safety shears, suspension point, note-taking tools optional

We’re used to learning through repetition of the katas, but what happens when structure limits our creativity and repetition without understanding becomes a cage?

In this workshop, Roxu and Ena propose to break the kata, not by rejecting but by deconstructing it. Through an approach that invites lateral thinking, this class aims to analyze and understand its structure and explore ways to achieve similar results through different paths. The conversation will also delve into context, intention, body, and emotion. Tying is not just replication – it’s understanding, and then choosing.

Throughout the class, we will work with a specific kata, the Mermaid, as a starting point. We’ll study it, break it down into its components, and play with its elements to rebuild it from a new angle. We’ll reflect on the difference between hanpuku (mindless repetition) and saigen (reproduction with understanding), and how this distinction can transform our rope practices entirely.

In order to break the rules, we must first know them. This is therefore a class intended for more advanced levels. You’ll need a solid TK (any style), confidence in managing suspension lines, and an open mindset to explore, break, and rebuild.

This was stunning to watch. I love the exploration of going into similar ties in different ways. 🖤

It will never stop being amusing to me that this style of gote is not taught on this site.
