Easy Floor Play

Fred Hatt

This playlist is part of our Rope Resolutions challenge to help make 2026 your knottiest year yet, so practice regularly this January to earn your streaks and win a prize. Find all of the details in our Community!

Experience prerequisites: Basic knots and frictions – this playlist is all about taking those foundational beginner shibari techniques and allowing you to play with them.

In this beginner-friendly playlist, you’ll learn how to start elevating early skills from “practice” to “play” with simple floor-based techniques focused on rope handling and flow. You’ll be able to put your abilities to the test with some of our favorite floor harnesses, curated to help you create your own floor flow sequence!

When we think of transitions on rope – moving between positions and ties in a coordinated and intentional way during your session – we tend to think of advanced suspensions. However, floor play can be as much about transitions as suspension. Being able to tie and untie quickly and move a partner through various positions can be the difference between “tying someone up” and “doing rope”. It’s here that you begin to discover the real magic of rope, where there is no final position and the journey is the destination.

Work through the videos in order and pay attention to how drilling your rope handling first makes tying harnesses all the more fluid. Make time to explore how it feels to mix and match these upper and lower body ties, find your favorite combinations, and then get collaborative about how you can move between positions. This is all about spending less time fiddling and more time connecting with your partner.
