In this shibari course, hua hua explores the possibilities and limitations of the various hand positions available in TKs together with her long-term tying partner Dantianshi.

Where the hands are placed in TKs is a small detail that can make or break your box tie. As hua hua explains, it’s more than just a matter of personal preference – hand placement possibilities will vary from person to person, TK to TK and tie to tie. Whether hands are in or out, low, high or somewhere in the middle will directly influence how your ties look, feel and perform. Understanding which choice to make when will help you create more sustainable and impactful ties – for every bottom and every box.

In the first two videos, hua hua demonstrates a hands-in position, using a stemmed TK, as well as a hands-out position using a stemless TK. Key here is not just that different tie constructions will be more or less suitable for different hand positions, but that there are implications for sensation, mobility and non-verbal expression depending on your choice.

From in and out to high, middle or low, the next two videos are all about which height you place the hands in TK and how that can create vastly different experiences. Demonstrating low and high hand positions, hua hua explains which might be your best choice.

Finally, Dantianshi shares feedback on the different positions – where she felt firmly held, where she felt comfortably at ease, and where she felt uncertain.
