Squeeze & Release Part 1
Part of Rebound Week! This session is making a special return until September 28.
Constructing the Exploding Lacing Harness
Class type: Demonstration and tie along
Duration: 45 minutes
Props: At least 6 x 7-8m ropes (we prefer thinner ropes for this, preferably 5mm and under, if you have them), safety shears, note-taking tools optional
In this class, you’ll learn the basic pattern of the exploding harness, a quick-release lacing structure that offers a ton of dynamic possibilities to play. Providing both visual and emotional impact, strong intensity, and elements of surprise, it’s a versatile and fun addition to your toolbox.
This simple-yet-different structure breaks away from more classical patterns and proposes new ways of working with pressure, progression, and body distribution on the floor, in partial suspension, or even on a hashira. Throughout the class, Roxu and Ena will break down the structure step by step, exploring its construction while paying attention to key points of tension, support, and safety.
The approach of the class is technical and straightforward, aimed at anyone who wants to expand their rope vocabulary with a new, functional tool that carries a strong presence. Previous experience with this structure or lacing in general is not required, but confidence in basic frictions and structures, as well as good rope handling, tension and partner communication is recommended. Please keep your skillset in mind when applying the techniques you will learn in this class to your practice. Be aware that this tie can be breath restrictive when tied tight and thus there’s a risk of fainting.
If you enjoyed this class, don’t miss Part 2, where we’ll explore getting creative with this harness.

One more question: I’ve got the mechanics down for this one (I think) but am having trouble getting the wrap tight due to the half hitch being able to move around. It seems like in order for it to be able to become undone quickly I need to wrap in the direction the half hitch is going in, but that makes it hard to tighten. Am I missing something?

Thanks for your question! Fuoco here to answer you, and I’m a tiny bit confused about what exactly you’re describing. But you’re now able to upload videos of you practicing in our new community space. If you want to take a quick video showing the thing you’re describing and tag me there, I’ll be happy to help!

I can totally understand that this is tricky to follow. While I can’t provide a close up, I can tell you that he’s tying a slipped half-hitch around the working line. So imagine that you’re tying a half-hitch with your bight, but rather than pulling the bight all the way through, you only pull it halfway through so that you create a quick release slipknot. Hope this helps!
