Suspension Points 101 (FREE)

Fred Hatt

In this free shibari course, Fred Hatt teaches how to set up a Suspension Point. Learn various methods to create hanging points using props like a sling, a pulley, bamboo, or a carabiner. We recommend watching these videos in the order they are presented here.

The first 'Intro' video is a short introduction covering some safety considerations and an overview of the different options available.

In the video 'Comparing Suspension Points', Fred goes over the differences between using a ring, a bamboo or carabiners for your suspensions. He explains some of the advantages and limitations of each option.

In the video 'Setting Up A Sling', he explains and demonstrates different ways of using a climbing sling to set up a ring or carabiners from a hard point.

In the video 'Setting Up A Bamboo', he explains and demonstrates how to tie off and set up a bamboo for suspensions. Please note that this method requires two separate hard points and should never be installed from a single hard point with both lines coming together in a triangle shape.

In the video 'Using Carabiners', he explains which types of carabiners are safe to use and demonstrates with his model Mio how to use them properly for your uplines. Using carabiners is very different to using a ring or a bamboo because the lines tend to jam and get stuck if not executed properly.

In the video 'Setting Up A Pulley', he teaches how to create a pulley system using a rope and carabiners. This technique is particularly useful for very intense suspensions meant to be short-lived, if you are new to suspensions and want to have an easy way out, or to smoothen out the lifts and drop-downs if your partner is significantly heavier than you.

Please make sure that the hard point(s) you are using when setting up a suspension point is safe and has been installed by a professional or has been tested prior to suspending yourself or a partner.

Is there a specific type of bamboo? Which are the specification for a bamboo to be used as a suspension point / hard point (size, diameter, etc.)?

I am not the person responsible to anwer, but I personally use bamboo 14 cm in diametr, which I bought in gardering store. I have also heard about using bamboos with a diameter of 10-12 cm but I don't know what their carrying capacity is (for example in the case of heavier partners).

An excellent series! This is something apparently took for granted in many Shibari courses... But not here!! Thank you so much for this!
