Drills For Single-Column Ties
In this shibari tutorial series, Fuoco teaches a series of drill exercises to help you practice and perfect single-column ties.
The single-column tie (SCT) is one of the first ties anyone learning shibari will encounter. As one of the fundamental building blocks of your rope practice right from the get-go, it’s essential not to dismiss the humble SCT as basic or unimportant. As Fuoco explains in this course, even the best and most advanced riggers dedicate themselves to making their single-column ties smoother, faster and cleaner. These exercises are designed to help you do the same, by focusing some time and energy into constructing better single-column ties.
This shibari course is divided into five videos – watch and drill each, pausing in between to take as much time as you need to practice each exercise until you’re able to repeat it consistently smoothly and confidently:
1 Building the Wrap – tips and tricks for more efficient cuff construction.
2 Constructing the Loop – paying attention to how you fold your rope.
3 Theory and Locking the Cuff – understanding how the Somerville bowline works.
4 Switching Hands – okay, now learn how to do it all with your non-dominant hand taking the lead…
5 Switching Directions – once you’ve mastered switching hands, further develop your handling by tying the cuff in the other direction.
This rope bondage course is suitable for beginner levels up. We recommend that everyone spend some time drilling shibari fundamentals, no matter how advanced your practice.

I really enjoyed the rope handling skills that was just promoted a few days ago. I tried it at a rope jam where I had plenty of room to be clumsy and felt a lot more competent afterwards! I’m going to keep doing those and look forward to trying this one!

I find tying the Somerville bowline around a vertical column extremely challenging as the loop wants to collapse due to the effects of gravity. I'd love to see a tutorial on that in this series.
