Nerve compression is one of the most common risks in shibari and as your practice progresses to include more challenging ties and suspensions, it’s not so much a question of ‘if’ rather than ‘when’. That ‘when’ can range from every scenario, from labbing to performances to, yes, on set for a Shibari Study production. While things may not always go according to plan in ropes, what is essential is having a strategy for addressing and managing complications such as nerve compression when they do occur – here, Ms Reemah and her model Anansi demonstrate a masterclass in exactly that.

This course provides a thorough example of what it looks like when nerve issues do occur during a tie. Remember that rope is highly personal and what feels like an acceptable risk to some may not be an acceptable risk to others, and how some people mitigate or manage risks may not be an option in every situation or tying dynamic. The intention of this class is not to provide an example that must be imitated exactly but, rather, to show how it can be done. Throughout the conversation, Ms Reemah and Anansi explore what effective communication can look like when problems arise, discuss the various adjustments they tried to troubleshoot the issue, and reflect on how they managed the moment together.
